Private Bonfire - Community Request

Published: 21 August 2024

As the evenings become cooler, many of us enjoy the warmth and comfort of a private bonfire. However, it's important to be mindful of the impact your bonfire can have on others in your community. Smoke from bonfires can cause discomfort, especially for those with respiratory conditions, and can create unpleasant odours for your neighbours.

To ensure everyone can enjoy the season without disruption, please consider the following:

* Check the Weather: Avoid lighting bonfires on windy days, as this can spread smoke and embers to nearby properties.

* Consider Timing: Try to have your bonfire during times when it is less likely to disturb others, such as earlier in the evening.

* Burn Responsibly: Only burn dry, clean materials. Wet or green wood can produce excessive smoke, and burning certain materials like plastics or painted wood is harmful and illegal.

* Keep It Safe: Always supervise your bonfire, keep it a safe distance from buildings and trees, and have water or a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies.

UK Laws on Bonfires
While there are no specific laws against having a bonfire in your garden, there are laws about the nuisance they can cause. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, a bonfire that causes excessive smoke and affects your neighbours could be considered a statutory nuisance. If reported, this could lead to an abatement notice, and failure to comply could result in a fine.
